Souvenirs and Collections

Ella and Great Granddad recently spent time together looking over the dolls he collected when he traveled for work in the 1960's. He went everywhere--from Iraq to Italy to Russia to Japan! Every time he came home, he presented his wife with a new doll. Now, 50 years later, the collection has the same magic. Ella was in awe.
say cheese!
I don't buy souvenirs when I travel within the states, but the two times I've gone international I bought a plate and bowls. I like using them daily to remind me of my trips. Here's a post I did about the bowls I bought from a Paris flea market. Two have already broken.  I'm enjoying the other three while they last!

How do you like to remember your vacations? Photos? Souvenirs? Good old fashioned memories?

  1. When my husband and I go on vacations we like to buy artist drawings of the national parks we visit. They look really great hanging in his office. I also buy my best friend magnets of trips.

  3. What a fantastic collection - a little girl's dream! If we vacation at the coast, then we always come home with more shells than we know what to do with!! Also 100s of photographs. The Huzz has a collection of booksmarks from all over the world, given to him as a child from all his travelling relatives.

  5. Ella is a doll! I'm into good old fashion memories! If I do buy anything, it usually something I can drink, eat or use in the kitchen. I love your bowls from Paris! The best part is your aren't worried about breaking them!

    Love your blog!

  6. My husband and I love to buy trinkets from our trips, lately we have started buying mugs and so this year have collected one from Manchester, Brussels, and Malmo. Other then those we have little statues and tea towels and really all sorts of things! You would think we were senior citizens with our love of travel nick nacks!

  9. We always buy a Christmas tree decoration. We have some lovely ones from NYC when we got married and gorgeous Disney ones from Florida. You can usually find something from a gift shop all year round, but there are much more to choose from around Christmas time ;o

  10. We buy children's books! This summer we bought a Clifford book about Washington DC and a touch and feel book about ponies following a trip to Chincoteague to see the wild ponies.

  11. Scarves or magnets. My collection is small, but every time I wear a scarf it reminds me of a time in that country.

  13. My mother in law buys xmas decorations, must be an british thing :) I really like the tea towel idea! We have a 3 year old and everywhere we go, be it local or national, we get the flattened pennies (insert 2 quarters and a penny). So cheap and I love going through them. it reminds me of fun times. I wish they did them abroad. I'm a souvernir hoarder so keep everything, including napkins, menus, pens from hotels and I keep them in ziploc bags labeled by vacation. It will be a nice thing to look at in years to come. If i had time and patience, I'd do a scrapbook for each vacay. If we head to the beach, I tend to put a little bit of sand and a few shells in a bottle to keep. I again label them! Vacay souvenirs are the only things I hoard, honest :)

  14. WOW, what a great collection! Our Mum started a thimble collection when we were young. From Paris (J´taime Paris, classic), Portugal, Prague, Venice, you name it. Don´t quite know what to do with them now though.

Ella: looking bright and sparkly with her lovely no-teeth smile! Isabella seems to loose only one at a time - so she´s got the pirate look well covered!

  17. So cool! We just found out my husband's grandmother has willed my daughter a collection of dolls from her travels. They're so beautiful with so much detail. I'm trying to figure out how to house them...http://jjiraffe.wordpress.com/2012/08/10/my-favorite-things-the-doll-collection/
