While at Fire Island last week, I noticed Owen waving his hands in seaweed methodically as he was getting out of the water. He was having so much fun exploring the slimy stringy texture on his own. Then I had the best idea ever.
"Hey Owen!" I shouted, "Hold up a bunch of seaweed for a picture! More! Grab more seaweed! Yes. Like that!"
He clearly thought it was the worst idea ever.
I usually like to stay out of my kids way when I take their pictures. But once in a while I ruin the moment by trying to capture it. This was one of those times. Please tell me I'm not alone.

great photo! Gotta do it some time!
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud! Can definitely relate :)
ReplyDelete(You're one of my regularly-read blogs, just want to say thanks for being you and authentic, and showing that not every post has to have award-winning photos. If it gets a reaction, that's enough! I'm starting up my own blog and like taking cues from the more established out there :)
I think that's your right as a mother lol
ReplyDeleteWait, do you mean I'm doing something wrong if ALL my photos of my kids look like this? :)
ReplyDeletelaughing out loud. awww, owen, so well behaved even when it's totally gross. i love that dude.
ReplyDeleteI bursted out into laughters seeing that picture of owen! It took me a couple of minutes to calm down so I can write this but AHAHA!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo..very entertaining one..
ReplyDeleteI have done that so many times! First I get upset about "missing the moment" and then I get upset for getting upset about a photo when I could have just been watching and enjoying. Oh, motherhood.
ReplyDeleteHehe that's very funny! Yes it can be really tricky getting shots like this - I find it works if you ask if you can take a shot of the thing they are involved with - so it's less about a photo of them but showing off what they are interested in. Eg you could say "Hey Owen could I take a shot of the seaweed? It looks really cool and slimy!" and then he might proudly hold it up and you can actually take a shot of him. It's worked for me with friends kids who don't like being photographed!
ReplyDeletecan't stop laughing. love it....
ReplyDeletehehe yea that's why i try to stay out and be hidden. but that means i have to delete a lot of photos that turned out poorly. hehe u made me laugh. ;-) i try to secretly video. but that too often calls for lots of deleted videos. lol
