On an Amtrak Train to Boston

AhHA: Traveling by train! Why didn't someone think of this sooner?  Big seats, a separate eating car with tables, huge windows, and even a Quiet Car. Of course we didn't get on the quiet car, but I love that it was an option for the other passengers. It took most of the traveling-with-kids guilt away. I wish airlines would have something like this. Also: kids rides are 50% off!
Don't let me fool you--the four+ hours it took to get to Boston wasn't a complete joy ride. The kids got bored fast because we forgot to bring ANY toys, crayons, snacks or DVDs. Whoops! But they found a new friend with good parents that brought toys and snacks. All things considered, the train ride is my favorite form of transportation yet.

I'd also like to say thanks to the Amtrak employee who spotted us out in the crowd and let us board first. He even reversed an escalator direction so we could get down faster and avoid the crowds. Since seats are first come first serve, we were able to sit together and comfortably.

I wish this was a sponsored post. Amtrak? You listening? I'll take more trips with you anytime!

Have you traveled by train? With kids? Did you like it? Where are some cool places out of NYC?

  2. Such a GREAT idea! We may consider this for our next trip where we would normally hop a plane.

    Love Amtrak!

  4. Never did the train thing, but it sounds like a wonderful way to travel with kids. Matt and I did a road trip up the East coast from Washington DC to Maine. I love, love love Acadia National Park in Maine. You could probably take a train up there. Boston is one of my favorite cities as well. I am excited to hear about your trip. Oh, and Newport, RI was also one of our favorite stops. - Lindsay

PS - I'm not sure why, but I have the hardest time getting my comments to post on your blog. I wonder if other people do as well. I have to hit post comment a million times.

  5. I've done Boston-NY and Boston-Connecticut and it was great. Though, one time I traveled Toronto-NY and it was NOT fun, took like 12 hours and at some points the train would go so slow...anyway, I still like to take it (just not for 12 hours!)

  6. Did the train thing in Europe with Annabelle when she was 9 months. Adored it. So easy with a stroller, no security checks, loved that I could walk right up to the platform and just get on the train. And it's so much more relaxing than planes too... definitely my favorite way to travel too.

My only negative part is that you have to watch your stuff at each stop to make sure no one grabs your bags and makes a break for it.

I've always wanted to take Amtrak down to southern California to see my family... the one that goes along the coastline. I heard they have a movie theater car in that one!
